Weekly Newsletter - 21st July 2024

Dear Parishioners,

Br Eamonn Davis’s funeral on Tuesday was a beautiful and heartwarming occasion. All week I have been hearing stories of how good he was to the people of the area, both young and old. Also a man of prayer, “Let God at ya” was one of his favourite sayings.

I hope there will be a good turnout for our last Mass as a parish on the Feast of St Ignatius Loyola, Wednesday 31st July at 7pm. Finger food and refreshments afterwards. Archbishop Dermot Farrell will come to celebrate it with us. It marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for our church.

We keep going!

Fr Niall

CELEBRATION OF THE 50 YEAS OFGARDINER STREET AS A PARISH.

Also, on 31st July at 7pm we will celebrate the past 50 years as a parish with a Mass, presided over and preached by Archbishop Farrell, followed by refreshments and finger food in the Pope Francis Corridor.

R.S.V.P. to sfx@jesuit.ie or by phone (01 8363411) before the 25th July

READING CLUB

Fr. Brendan has had some requests from parishioners about starting up a reading club next September. One parishioner said, I need to have an intelligent faith.” With this in mind, Fr. Brendan proposes a group reading of Who is Jesus? – An Introduction to Christology by Fr Thomas P. Rausch, S.J. This book is available for purchase onAmazon.com. No prior knowledge of theology is required! This is a very accessible book. Think about it over the summer. More news about this in early September.

OUR RECENTLY DECEASED

We remember in prayer those who have died recently:

Elizabeth Storey

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen.

THE MESSENGER | JULY 2024

166TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF VENERABLE MARY AKENHEAD- 22ND JULY

Mary Aikenhead was born in Cork in1787. In 1815, following training at the Bar Convent in York, she founded the Religious Sisters of Charity. At York, their studies and formation were based on the spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatian spirituality thus became the spiritual heritage of her own congregation.

The work of Mary Aikenhead included the establishment of schools, hospitals and orphanages for people in need, and visiting of the poor, especially the sick in their homes, and those in prison. At the request of the Archbishop of Dublin, the Sisters of Charity opened their first school in 1830 in Gardiner Street, Dublin.

Mary Aikenhead departed this life0n the 22nd July 1858, in Our Lady's Mount, Harolds Cross, Dublin.

On 18 March 2015, a decree was issued proclaiming her heroic virtues. This entitles her to be referred to as the Venerable Mary Aikenhead

In Our Lady’s Chapel, Gardiner Street Church, there is a space dedicated to Mary Aikenhead with of two panels that detail her life and service to the poor. We invite you to pay a visit to this space and say the following prayer:

O God,

You blessed Mary Aikenhead with deep faith and compassion and gave her a special gift of love for those in any kind of need.

With this in mind and through her prayer I now ask

(Here mention your intentions)

With great trust in your love for me, O my God, I leave my requests in your hands.

(Please notify the Sisters of Charity nearest to you of any requests granted through the intercession of Mary Aikenhead)
