Saturday the 13th of May is a day that will be remembered in the history of St Francis Xavier’s when Gardiner Street Parish hosted the first ever beatification in Ireland. Pope Francis’s representative Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, at the request of the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin and the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin and Glendalough read the Apostolic Letter from Pope Francis declaring Fr John Sullivan, ‘Blessed John Sullivan’. Pope Francis also assigned Fr. John’s birthday the 8th May as his Feast Day.
The process for the Beatification of Blessed John Sullivan has taken decades and now we are gathering all the fruit of this patient work. In hosting the ceremony St Francis Xavier’s needed a lot of help from the parish and the wider Jesuit community. A Committee met for almost two months on a weekly basis to plan and prepare the day. Over a 100 volunteers were involved in an array of tasks in helping to make the day a wonderful success. Students from Belvedere, Clongowes and Coláiste Iognáid Galway freely gave up their time to help. Our staff at Gardiner Street worked hard in the week before the day to make the Church look so welcoming and a place worth of Blessed John’s great day. The liturgy itself required a great deal of preparation and the participation of many willing hearts. The Pro-Cathedral team have been a special help in the whole lead-up. Gardiner Street Parish and the Jesuit Community thanks everyone who helped make May the 13th 2017 a day to be remembered in the Catholic Church in Ireland. May our petitions be granted through the intercession of Blessed John Sullivan.
Ordination Sunday 14th May Today is also a special day for the Jesuits in Ireland because Edward Cosgrove SJ will be ordained priest by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin at Mass in the Chapel at Milltown Park, Dublin. We wish Eddie every blessing on the day and lifelong fulfillment in his ministry as a Jesuit priest.
