WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY (18-25 JANUARY) Theme: Justice and only justice you shall pursue (Deuteronomy 16:18-20).  Just a note to remind you that every year in January we begin a week of prayer for christian unity.  The parish team welcomes all initiatives to foster unity with our fellow Christians especially in the locality.  Don’t hesitate to get in touch with ideas or proposals.

INAUGURAL SERVICE FOR THE WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY:  This years’ service for Churches in the Dublin area will take place on Friday 18 January at 8pm, in St. John the Baptist Church of Ireland, Seafield Road West, Clontarf, Dublin 3. The preacher will be Fr Fachtna McCarthy.  This act of worship is organised by the Dublin Council of Churches and all are welcome. Wouldn’t it be great if a delegation from Gardiner Street helped launch the Week by going to this service!  (Please contact Fr. Gerry or Fr. Richard).

JANUARY’S MONTHLY MASS FOR BLESSED JOHN SULLIVAN SJ with Blessing of the Sick and Thanksgiving for his Life will be celebrated next Saturday the 19th of January at 1pm.
The Blessing of the Sick incorporates the celebration of the Eucharist, an offering of Prayers and Petitions to Blessed John Sullivan and a Blessing with his Crucifix.

THE NOVENA OF GRACE will begin as always on 4th March and continue until the 12th March.  Our preacher this year will be Fr. Kevin O’Rourke SJ.  We look forward to his message.  And in the evenings during the Novena we are opening up a new space for the young with a Faith Fest called “Hearts on Fire”.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THE CHRISTMAS DUES
Christmas Dues are an important offering which help in the running and expense of the Church. Mass at 9.15 on Sunday 20th January will be offered for the intentions of the donors.

GIVEN THE INCREASE IN THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY INFLUENZA in recent weeks, it is opportune to remind ourselves of sensible practices.  It is good to remember that those with ‘flu symptoms are dispensed from their Sunday obligation to attend Mass. Shaking hands while exchanging the ‘Sign of Peace’ involves a low risk of spreading the virus.” However, If some parishioners still feel uncomfortable about shaking hands at the Sign of Peace, they are very welcome to wish others the Peace of Christ without hand contact (with a smile or a bow).

ALPHA AT GARDINER STREET

POPE’S JANUARY PRAYER INTENTION: FOR YOUTH TO FOLLOW MARY’S EXAMPLE
Pope Francis released a video message accompanying his prayer intention for January, which this month is “For young people to follow the example of Mary”.
It has become the custom of Pope Francis to release a video message detailing his prayer intention for each month.
The full text of his intention is below:

You young people have, in the Virgin Mary, a reason for joy and a source of inspiration.
Take advantage of the World Youth Day in Panama to contemplate Christ together with Mary. We will pray the Rosary together for peace, each of us in our own language.
And ask for strength to dream and to work for peace.
Let us pray that young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world.

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network of the Apostleship of Prayer developed “The Pope Video” initiative to assist in the worldwide dissemination of monthly intentions of the Holy Father in relation to the challenges facing humanity.

Preparations are underway for the  Catholic Church’s World Youth Day (WYD) that takes centre stage in Panama City, January 22-27.  Pope Francis is scheduled to join the celebrations January 23 onwards.

ECOTIP

Keep your doors closed
Think about what rooms you don’t use in your home and keep those doors closed. If you have your heater going, you really just want to focus on the rooms you will actually be in, Keeping the heater on for the whole house will make those bills skyrocket and is certainly not kind to the environment.
