Weekly Bulletin 1st December 2019

The Feast of St Francis Xavier will be celebrated at 11am Mass on Tuesday 3rd December.
St. Francis Xavier was born in the Castle of Xavier, in Northern Spain on April 7th, 1506, into a noble family and was the youngest of five children, His Father died when Francis was aged nine.
In 1525, Francis left home to pursue his studies at the University of Paris. He would never return home and would never see his family again.
It was in Paris that Francis met two other students who would have a huge influence on his life, Pierre Favre and Ignatius of Loyola. In 1534 Francis took vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre, Paris, together with Ignatius and other companions. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Portuguese Empire of the time and was influential in evangelization work, most notably in India. He was the first Christian missionary to venture into Japan, Borneo, the Maluku Islands, and other areas. Xavier was about to extend his missionary preaching to China when he died on Shangchuan Island.
He was beatified by Pope Paul V on 25 October 1619 and canonized by Pope Gregory XV on 12 March 1622. Known as the “Apostle of the Indies” and “Apostle of Japan”, he is considered to be one of the greatest missionaries since Saint Paul. In 1927, Pope Pius XI  named Saint Francis Xavier, along with Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, co-patron of all foreign missions.
